Gas Diffusion Electrodes for the eltrochemical industry
The prefered technology for chemical reactions are electrochemical
processes, as they have the highest efficiency toward costs and ecology. The
running costs are very low and you do not have to care for solvents etc. The
reaction is simply controlled by the voltage and current. By the use of gas
diffusion electrodes these processes could be extended, as you are now able
to provide the reaction with a controlled amount of gas.
Gas diffusion electrodes have to offer simultaneously space for fluids and
gases.
It is provided by a dry mixing process, which spins the basic materials -
PTFE, catalyst and additives. PTFE forms a liquid repellent matrix which
binds the catalyst and the liquid attracting materials. These materials are
rolled to a thin, flexible, endless sheet. We bring an additional screen
into this flexible sheet, providing the electrode with a higher mechanical
stability and a lower ohmic resistance. For some purposes we add an
additional porous, water repelling PTFE-sheet onto the electrode.
The standard electrodes work with hydrogen, oxygen
and ammonia. They are used in fuel cells, electrolyzers hydrogen reference
electrodes. Experience has been made with silver-, platinum-, carbon-,
copper-, nickel-catalysts and oxidic materials. Other catalysts can be used
by customer request.
